Lake Victoria is one of the African Great Lakes. The lake was named after Queen Victoria. Lake Victoria is the world's 2nd largest freshwater lake by surface area; only Lake Superior in North America is larger. This lake is blamed to be responsible for the extinction of many Haplochromis cichlids as it dried out approximately 18,000 years ago. Around 3000 years later the lake refilled and homes a number of beautiful Haplochromis and many other cichlids today.
